In the heart of tradition: art and history in Romagna

Little far from the seaside, there are places that keep the secrets of art and history in Romagna, also reviving some ancient traditions. The villages of the Romagnole valleys, often secluded below a dominating medieval castle, are prominent centers for arte povera: once families built everything at home, including the pans for the piadina, or took the wheat to the village mill to have it ground.

Today, art and history are kept alive in these enchanting places, where the skillfulness of artisans meets with that of farmers and vine growers, thanks to whom we can taste the flavors of Romagnole cuisine.

Day 1

Montescudo

Montescudo is a very ancient village, the scene of battles between the Malatestas and the Montefeltroes. The sanctuary of Valliano hosts an ethnographic museum: pictures, items and interviews will guide you to the discovery of traditional farming culture. The exhibition is well-suited for children, who will appreciate the tales from the past.

Mondaino

Between the Adriatic Sea and the hills of Montefeltro lies Mondaino, a village whose origins are lost in time. It was an important centre for the production of ceramics, now gathered in a museum, where you can admire the reconstruction of a handcrafting laboratory of the Sixteenth century.

Tasting typical products

In Mondaino you can discover some of the typical flavors of Romagna: what better place than a mill of the Sixteenth century to let you discover pit cheese, seasoned following an ancient recipe? At the Mulino della Porta di Sotto (the Mill of the Lower Door), history, culture, wine and food meet, for an unforgettable experience.

Day 2

The village of Sogliano

A promenade through the village of Sogliano will make you discover wondrous views, with the panorama that emerges from behind every corner of the hills. Furthermore in the village you will be able to discover small museums that gather documents and precious items, such as Leonardo da Vinci’s notes about Romagna.

Museo di Arte Povera

In Sogliano you will find the Museo di Arte Povera. It gathers small pieces of paper, picture cards and prints that tell about history from a different point of view from that of school books. It is a world of amusing and colorful individual stories, which will surprise you.

Montetiffi

Montetiffi has been for centuries the production center of clay pans on which to cook the piadina, the bread of Romagna. Today this artisanal tradition is lively in the village visitors can join the creation of pans… and maybe treat themselves to a tasting of the typical pit cheese!

Day 3

Santarcangelo

Santarcangelo is a village in which tradition and innovation are interwoven, with extraordinary results. Marchi print factory uses an ancient press and molds manually engraved, thanks to which they create paintings in ancient and modern style. In the village you can also find the museum dedicated to Tonino Guerra, poet and playwright of different movies, including “Amarcord”.

Poggio Torriana

In the village of Poggio Torriana you will find a unique museum, suitable for adults and children: at the Sapignoli Mill, cereals were ground and today you can admire still functioning mechanisms, accompanied by the memories and pictures of the miller who worked here.

Montebello

Romagna is a land of farmers and artisans, but also of mysteries: the walls of the Montebello fortress tell about the legend of Azzurring, the young daughter of the local lord, who centuries ago died precisely here. Some people swear they have heard her ghost wander throughout the castle..
