September holidays in Italy: in Romagna between the seaside and the castles

September holidays in Italy are perfect to enjoy the beach of Riccione, but also to discover the castles on the hills, quite close to the seaside. In Romagna you can leave your umbrella and find yourself soon afterwards crossing the medieval streets of an ancient village, and going and looking out of its walls to admire the panorama. You can discover the handicrafts that have been created for centuries following ancient traditions, or taste the dishes that farmer families used to prepare at home in the ancient times, with the produce of their land. Romagna is great both if you wish to relax in the sun, and if you want to immerse into art and culture. We are waiting for you!

Day 1

Montescudo

Montescudo is a small town immersed in the Romagnole hills, where you can walk around and enjoy unique panoramas. In the village you will find also the Ethnographic Museum of Valliano: a small place, but keeping items able to tell many tales from the past, showing ancient farmers’ life.

Mondaino

The village of Mondaino will surprise you with its square in the unusual half-circle shape, on which a neoclassic porch looks out. Back to some centuries ago, the village used to produce wonderful ceramics, which can be admired in the relevant museum.

Tasting of the typical pit cheese

One of the symbols of Mondaino is the cheese that is seasoned in the typical subterranean pits… You can’t leave the village without tasting it at the Mill of the Lower Door, the Mulino della Porta di Sotto where you can find wonderful products and a love of tradition.

Day 2

The village of Sogliano

Sogliano is one of the villages that dominate the valley of the river Savio: from here you can enjoy a wonderful view of the hills, but also discover many interesting places situated all through its center. For example the Butterfly Fountain, ideated by poet Tonino Guerra, which will surprise you with its colors.

Museo di Arte Povera

The vilages of the Rubicon valley are rich at art and conceal many small museums, often original and peculiar. One is surely the Museo di Arte Povera of Sogliano, where you can admire picture cards, small calendars, prestige editions: each of them telling dozens tales.

Montetiffi

One of the symbols of Romagna is piadina, prepared in place of bread: its origins are lost in time, but we know it was cooked on a clay pan. Montetiffi was the production center of such pans and, still nowadays, here workesperienzes are held to discover how this special item is created.

Day 3

Santarcangelo, Poggio Torriana and Montebello

Those who visit Santarcangelo cannot help falling in love with its flowery balconies and the view on the hills and the seaside. In the village you will find the ancient Marchi print factory, where tradition and modernity meet in the production of the typical printed clothes of Romagna such as dishrags or pinafores, and a small museum dedicated to poet Tonino Guerra.

Poggio Torriana and Mulino Sapignoli

Romagna is a land of traditions tied to agricolture, which still today charm the visitor of our territoties. In the village of Poggio Torriana there is a special museum: the Sapignoli Mill, where images and memories take life in the hall of grindstones, still working, which transform cereals into wheat.

Montebello

There are plenty of mysteries and legends in the villages of Romagna: those who love castles and ghost tales can sightsee Montebello, an ancient fortress where apparently still today the ghost of Azzurrina, a girl daughter to the local lord, is still wandering…
